Our Story
Our journey has been anything but ordinary.
We bought our bare‑land lifestyle block in 2002. By early 2006 we’d built a home, planted a vineyard, and welcomed two children. The Blackhouse name arrived in 2004, inspired by our decision to clad our home in black‑stained plywood, a simple idea that became a defining part of who we are.
Nestled in North Canterbury, we’re a family‑owned boutique vineyard where hands‑on experience meets genuine hospitality. Kerry is the practical backbone of the property, bringing decades of knowledge in construction, safety, and detail‑focused workmanship - the reason our restored cellar door and Old Library boardroom feel solid, welcoming, and beautifully maintained. Gill has led events since 1996, pairing professional coordination with a calm, organised approach that keeps every booking running smoothly.
Together we’ve shaped this property from the ground up. Since planting the vineyard, every season has been worked by hand - pruning, bud‑rubbing, shoot‑thinning, fruit‑dropping and all the careful detail that keeps small‑batch vines healthy and balanced. In 2025, we took a confident step forward, adding a dedicated board room and cellar door to showcase our award‑winning, handcrafted wines.
When you book with us, you’re in capable, reliable hands: practical stewardship, professional event delivery, and a personal commitment to creating comfortable, memorable experiences for your guests.
The vines
The Blackhouse pinot gris vines were planted in spring 2005 and 2007. Our Boundary Road site was specifically purchased for the establishment of the pinot gris vineyard, as the free draining silt loam and glacial riverbed soils, coupled with Canterbury’s warm dry climate are ideal for the production of this variety.
We have developed the site using sustainable practices. Our wine is handcrafted as we manage the vineyard ourselves and carry out all work, including harvesting, by hand.
The old library boardroom
Originally designed by Warren and Mahoney and opened in 1959, the former Cashmere Junior Library was relocated to our site in September 2025 and opened to the public in July 2026. The building has been restored and modernised to suit the needs of the 21st century. Outside there is an expansive 70 sqm deck overlooking the vineyard with table, built in seating and BBQ ideal year round.
